Welcome!

November 14, 2003

Todays' entry isn't exactly a new activity.  We did this a few months ago, but it's definitely a fun one.  Calum and I decided it would be fun to be birds.  So we cut out about a million paper feathers, wings, and even a tail.  We used a bit of masking tape and TADA we have a bird.  We learned about the life cycle of birds through active roll play.  We covered up in a blanket to "hatch out of our eggs."  We looked at some pictures of mommy birds feeding babies on the internet.  We practiced flying around the house.  (Or jumping off the furniture.)  We built a nest on our "couch tree" out of pillows and blankets and also observed some real bird nests I collected earlier in the year.  I gave Calum a shelled walnut and demonstrated with a nut cracker how some birds use their beaks.  We also looked through animal books at different bird and learned that birds are the only creatures with feathers.  After our games, we pasted bird pictures in their nests matching sizes.  We also learned the letter B and counted the eggs in the nests on a worksheet for our math activity.  It sounds like a lot, but when he is excited, activities seem to go a lot faster and tend to be more productive.  Calum looks back at these pictures and asks if we can do this lesson again!

I am Amanda and this is my five year old son, Calum.  We chose to home-school for many reasons.  Mainly, the schools in the area we live in are substandard and violent.  Also, we are a military family and can expect to move around quite often.  Another reason is because of our religion.  And on top of all of that, I love teaching my son and he is a great teacher for me, as well.  Here is our journal.  Enjoy!
